About Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B spreads through blood, semen, and vaginal fluids. It can also be passed to babies during pregnancy or childbirth. In the UK, infants receive the hepatitis B vaccination as part of the 6-in-1 schedule.
Symptoms of mild hepatitis B include high temperature, stomach pain, nausea, hives, jaundice, and lethargy. The infection usually lasts 1-3 months, with many people experiencing no symptoms. If it lasts longer than 6 months, it's called "chronic hepatitis B".
Chronic hepatitis B is treated with antivirals and other medications to relieve symptoms. Regular appointments with a liver specialist are essential, as chronic hepatitis B can increase the risk of liver cirrhosis or cancer.
Will I need a Hepatitis Vaccine to travel?
Yes, there's a risk of contracting hepatitis B almost anywhere in the world, especially in Asia, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. Activities such as sexual intercourse with locals, exposure to blood or contaminated bodily fluids, and use of contaminated needles increase the risk. Travellers staying for extended periods should get vaccinated, regardless of their destination.
